Maintaining your block

There are a lot of different products on the market to maintain your block. Food-safe mineral oil is the standard, or a butcher block conditioner that contains beeswax is preferred.
We have used several brands of oil and conditioners to treat our blocks, but none stand out quite like Walrus Oil ®. It is food-safe, all natural, FDA compliant, and made in the USA. We highly recommend Walrus Oil® to treat your blocks and utensils. To purchase, click here.

How often you treat your block is a common debate, but our rule of thumb for new boards is as follows:

Word to the wise
- DO NOT put your block in the dishwasher. Detergents are harsh and the heat/dry cycle will destroy your block.
- DO NOT treat your block with any type of cooking oil. Oils such as olive oil, vegetable oil, or peanut oil can ruin the block and produce a foul smelling block.
- Storing your block can also be important. The best method of storage is in a dry location, placing the block on its side.
